What is a blackjack tournament?

A blackjack tournament is a card game tournament similar to poker tournaments in that a group of players sit at any number of tables (whether online or in a casino) and play a certain number of hands or for a certain time to determine a winner of that table. The table winner then goes on to another table where the last game is usually played.

While it’s possible to win a lot of money playing blackjack tournaments, be aware that there are lots of professional players out there that hit as many tournaments as they can (others are more selective and just go for the high-winning tournaments). Blackjack tournaments can be found as small daily tournaments in casinos or large ones in various venues. The larger the tournament the larger the pay generally speaking.

Remember that each casino generally has its own set of blackjack rules, and they can vary widely. In addition to that, the scoring methods and other rules may change just for the tournament. Some are played by the number of hands, but now and then you may find one that plays by a time limit with a final round hand. So you must always be on the ball and know your rules before each tournament, not just for each casino.

When you begin the tournament, you will buy in with a certain amount of money for a certain amount of chips. Betting will have limits, and they will tell you that before play begins--make sure you understand the structure of the betting. You will not be allowed to have pens or paper, calculators, a coach, mobile phones, or any other device that could aid your game. Once you make a bet, you cannot change it and will have to play it out. Remember to ask for time limits on hand play--usually this is between 15 and 30 seconds depending on the tournament. Other than these basic rules (and the rules of the game play) the casino will have its own individual rules concerning play, and there may be additional rules for each tournament.

As you play more tournaments and rise in the ranks, you will probably see some of the same faces as when you started. You may also catch some of the rising blackjack stars who have been playing many years. Remember, though, that everyone has a bad day. If you end up facing one of these pros, keep in mind that the cards you’re dealt also have a lot to do with a good or bad game outcome, and the pro sitting next to you might not get good cards.

You might also want to stay with smaller casino tournaments where you don’t see the pros but don’t get the large pots either. However, sometimes winners of the smaller tournaments get sent up to bigger ones and end up in the high-level games anyway. Regardless of which kind of blackjack tournament you prefer, always make sure you know the rules well. One mistake could cost you a hand, and one hand can cost you the whole tournament.

Your blackjack tournament experience can be fun and rewarding, and you can also meet a lot of new friends this way. Even if you are just in it for fun, though, you should make sure you are skilled at the game before you take on larger tournaments or play tougher competitors. Although much of blackjack is luck of the cards, remember that there are skills you will need to use that are exclusive to blackjack if you want to be able to win hands and tournaments. It’s no fun to play any game if you constantly lose, especially where money is involved.
